Trichomoniasis Testing & Treatment
What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis, often referred to as "trich," is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. This microscopic organism can be transmitted during sexual intercourse through the exchange of bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal, and rectal fluids. It affects both men and women, although it is more frequently diagnosed in women. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were approximately 156 million new cases of trichomoniasis among people aged 15-49 years in 2020, making it one of the most common curable STIs globally.
Trichomoniasis Test in Singapore
Testing for trichomoniasis is straightforward and typically involves examining a swab or urine sample to detect the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. For women, a vaginal swab is used, while men may provide a urethral swab or urine sample.
Trichomoniasis Symptoms
Symptoms of trichomoniasis can vary while some people may
not exhibit any symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they can include:
In Women:
- Vaginal discharge that is frothy, yellow-green, and has a strong odour
- Vaginal itching and irritation
- Pain during urination and sexual intercourse
- Lower abdominal discomfort
In Men:
- Discharge from the penis
- Irritation or itching inside the penis
- Burning sensation after urination or ejaculation
Complications of Trichomoniasis
While trichomoniasis is generally considered a mild infection, it can lead to several complications if left untreated which include:
- Increased Risk of Other STIs: The inflammation caused by the parasite can make it easier for other pathogens to enter the body, increasing the risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Untreated trichomoniasis can lead to PID in women. PID is a serious infection of the female reproductive organs that can cause long-term complications, including infertility.
- Pregnancy Complications: In pregnant women, trichomoniasis is associated with preterm delivery, low birth weight, and other adverse pregnancy outcomes. Treating the infection during pregnancy is crucial to reduce these risks.
- Prostatitis in Men: Trichomoniasis can lead to prostatitis in men, an inflammation of the prostate gland, which can cause discomfort and urinary issues.
How Fast Does Trichomoniasis Show Up?
Trichomoniasis symptoms typically appear within 5 to 28 days after exposure to the parasite. Some individuals may not experience symptoms for several weeks, months or not at all, which means that an individual can spread the infection before symptoms show up.
Is Trichomoniasis Curable?
Trichomoniasis is curable with appropriate medical treatment. Additionally, abstaining from sexual activity until the infection is fully cleared is advised to avoid spreading the parasite to others.
Trichomoniasis Treatment
Treatment for trichomoniasis typically involves the administration of oral antibiotics, such as metronidazole or tinidazole. However, the recommended dosage may vary depending on individual circumstances. Be sure to complete the entire course of medication prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms disappear, to ensure complete eradication of the infection and discuss potential side effects beforehand.
