It can help identify liver disease such as fatty liver, assess liver health, or monitor the progression of certain conditions.

It can also be combined with liver function blood tests for a more thorough evaluation.

A liver ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the liver and surrounding structures. It is commonly used as an initial diagnostic tool in the evaluation of liver health. Common liver-related conditions that may be detected include:

• Fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis): An ultrasound can detect excess fat deposits in the liver, commonly associated with metabolic syndrome, obesity, and alcohol use.
• Liver cirrhosis: While early cirrhosis may not be clearly visible, advanced stages often show signs such as a nodular liver surface, changes in liver size, and altered blood flow.
• Lumps or growths in the liver: An ultrasound can help spot abnormal areas in the liver, such as harmless cysts or unusual lumps that may need more testing to find out what they are.
• Bile duct obstruction: Dilation of bile ducts seen on ultrasound may indicate blockages caused by gallstones, strictures, or tumors.
• Liver cysts and abscesses: Fluid-filled sacs or collections of pus can be identified and further assessed for clinical relevance.
