Tamiflu® Singapore
Last updated: Jul 05, 2025
What Is Tamiflu®?
Tamiflu®, also known as oseltamivir, is an antiviral medication used to treat and prevent influenza (flu). Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Tamiflu® is available in capsule form and as an oral suspension, and it is prescribed to reduce the severity and shorten the duration of flu symptoms. Because the flu is quite common, Tamiflu® can help lessen its impact on your daily activities.
Influenza Symptoms
Symptoms of influenza can appear within 1 to 4 days after exposure to the influenza virus and can range from mild to severe:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Some individuals, especially children, may also experience vomiting and diarrhoea

How Does Tamiflu® Work?
Tamiflu® works by inhibiting the activity of neuraminidase, an enzyme present on the surface of the influenza virus. This action prevents the virus from spreading to healthy cells, helping to slow down the progression and reduce the severity of the flu. Tamiflu® is most effective in shortening the duration of flu symptoms by approximately 1 day when taken within 48 hours of noticing symptoms. It is typically prescribed for 5 days and is best taken with food to minimize possible side effects.

Tamiflu® Side Effects
While Tamiflu® is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects that can include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach pain
- Headache
- Dizziness
In rare cases, individuals may experience more severe side effects such as allergic reactions or neuropsychiatric events, including confusion and abnormal behaviour. It is important to consult a doctor promptly if any severe or unusual symptoms occur.
